I love how much life you’ve packed into this, Marisol. Trees as neighbors, witnesses, healers, teachers, shelters, mirrors. The progression from the very particular (PinOakio! Maplie!) toward questions about reciprocity, mortality, grief, and renewal was lovely.
I was particularly struck by “Shedding.” A deciduous passage, simple and enormous.
Thank you for the words, the photos, and mostly the deep affection.
Listening to two tree related podcasts and books: Krista Tippet 2019 show interview with Wangari Maathai, and Suzanne Simard’s “When the Forest Breathes”. Thank you for this heartfelt post including neighbors rejoicing over trees. Love!
In Lithuanian folklore and culture, trees are sacred and living links between the earth, human life, and the divine. "Tree" is a character in my book who talks to the protagonist. Some believe that departed spirits return in the form of trees. I like to think we were the original tree huggers.
Some absolutely stunning photos of trees, Marisol. And I loved so many of the words that came with them.
There is a tree close to my house that I see every morning when I go for a walk. And it’s so beautiful and peaceful and just brimming with wisdom — it makes me feel better every time I see it. I will have to share a pic of it one of these days.
I’ll try get a good pic soon. The trouble is the tree is so gosh darn big I don’t know how to get it all the the photo. I’ve taken pics of it before and none do it justice. Especially because so much of its wisdom is at its base/trunk — a good photo would explain this better hahaha. I’ll try get one soon :)
Sorry I'm coming a little late to this conversation, having been travelling for the past couple of days over land from Portugal to Switzerland, through landscapes where many trees have burnt (or should I say have been cremated? by global warming? or crazy humans?)
I didn't see any of the evidence, since most of the journey through burnt areas passed in the dark of night.
This amazing post of yours, dear Marisol, reminds me of some research I did a couple of years ago — on trees and truth and druids (there is an etymological connection between these words!) — I thought I'd already written (and published) wordcasts on this (more than one) but right now cannot find any. It is possible that they were written but not yet published... I'll have to come back to this when my brain is a little more settled after the long sleepless night.
I realised I've started the research a couple of years ago but never finished the wordcast. A good seedling to pick up again in the autumn... 🌱 It's such an interesting topic. Thanks for cheering me on 💚 🙏 🌳
I am going to try to go to the September live wild church meeting that Leah is hosting. I can't recall where you are in the world. Any chance you will be there? I would love to meet you live if you are in that part of the world. It's a bit of a drive for us so we will be camping at a nearby park.
To walk amongst and talk with trees always makes me feel more peaceful, their conversation always wise and kind, and a beautiful source of advice and answers.
Your love for these trees shines through every line. I’m grateful for the way you remind us of all they teach and give, just by being. This was such a gentle, grounding read.
Trees are such good companions and story tellers. I have been fantasizing about traveling to see trees around the world and writing about them...but that is a highly ambitious endeavor.
Thank you for the gifts that you share, Marisol, like:
"Acorns crack open…
so majestic Oaks can be.
Hear calls, surrender."
"Could we,
as deciduous trees do,
accept
leaving as part of living,
losing as part of lasting,
grieving as part of growing,
hurting as part of loving?"
— This reply is from an old tree that can't decide if he is a Live Oak, Weeping Willow, or Guayabo. 😎🙏🏻
Hybrid trees are us,
or identity-confused?
True to our nature!
Thank you very much…indeed. 🙏🏻

Trees as “links” and “characters” and “spirits”!
As a young child, this your friend decided to name Tree (in Spanish, Árbol) the first male offspring might birth in the future.

Requiem to burnt woods?

I love meeting your neighbors! Also enjoying Leah’s book and spending time with my tree teachers. It was great seeing you on the zoom call.
